Natasha Kissell's work plays with pictorial conventions and art historical images embedded in our collective consciousness. Turning these conventions on their heads, she humorously sneaks in paraphernalia from modern life – a modernist house, a set of headphones and a ski slope lit up by neon lights – to comment on our expectations of Romantic imagery and its use in contemporary culture. The Hours series - painted for her latest show at Eleven - takes its sources from the medieval Book of Hours which listed the appropriate texts for each liturgical hour. Kissell’s paintings propose a more flexible understanding of time, closely associated with the contemplation of nature. Contrasting with her perfectly mastered painterly technique, Kissell leaves her stories open to interpretation.
